作物研究所 本館
The National Institute of Crop Science conducts research on the breeding of rice,whete,barley,soybean,sweet potato and industrial crops such as sesame and the development of new technologies for breeding.Research activities also cover the improvement of agronmic and physiological characteristics and the development of crops adapted to low-input management and high-quality crops.NICS works to improve the self-supporting food ratio of Japan through these research efforts.

Rice

・Breeding of low-cost production rice cultivars with direct seeding adaptability and high yield for whole-crop silage and food industry
・Development of near-isogenic rice lines and marker-assisted selection systems for durable resistance to disease and pests
・Physiological research on yield and quality formation process and development of breeding resources for yield and quality improvement using rice genomic information
・Development of genetically modified rice with new useful properties and advanced genetic engineering techniques

Soybean,Sweetpotato and Sesame

・Development of new cultivars and cultivation technologies for high-quality soybean production
・Physiological research on breakthrough technologies for improving important properties such as flooding injury to soybean
・Breeding of excellent tasting sweet poteto cultivars and research on processing features and innovative cultivation traits
・Breeding of millet and sesame cultivars with high functional properties

Wheat and Barley

・Breeding of top-quality,early maturing,high-yield wheat cultivars with necessary resistance to pre-harvest sprouting and diseases
・Breeding of the six-rowed barley for edible and barley tea cultivars,and development of quality evaluation and selection method
・Development of evaluation techniques for flour quality,flour color and milling quality
・Genetic and physiological research for important properties such as resistance to pre-harvest sprouting in wheat and barley
